DENVER (March 14, 2018) Saturday night, March 17th, Top Rank Promotions (Bob Arum) presents their St. Patrick’s Day boxing show at the Madison Square Garden Theater in New York, New York, televised LIVE on ESPN/ESPN Deportes.
Featured in the main event should be a real barn-burner when Jose Carlos Ramirez (21-0, 16KO’s) takes on Amir ‘Young Master’ Imam (21-1, 18KO’s) for the vacant WBC World Super lightweight title in a scheduled for 12 rounds bout. Ramirez is promoted by Bob Arum and Imam by Don King, two legendary Hall-of-Fame boxing promoters.
The partially attractive undercard is lead by Oleksandr Gvozdyk (14-0, 12 KO’s) vs Mehdi Amar (34-5-2, 16KO’s) for the interim WBC World Light heavyweight title. A lightweight bout featuring Puerto Rican sensation Felix Verdejo (23-0, 15KO’s) and Antonio Lozado, Jr. (38-2, 32KO’s) could turn out to be interesting, the competition in the lightweight division heating up. Undefeated Super featherweight Christopher Diaz (22-0, 14KO’s) takes on Braulio Rodriguez (19-2, 17KO’s) in a bout where hot exchanges can be anticipated while lightweight Jose Pedraza (22-1, 12KO’s) battles Jose Luis Rodriguez (23-11, 13KO’s) in another interesting lightweight matchup. ‘Irish‘ Mike Conlan (5-0, 4KO’s) tangles with David Berna (15-2, 14KO’s) in a bout that on paper looks intriguing but Berna was stopped twice in 2017, both times inside of 2 rounds by two with far inferior pedigree than Conlan. An added twist may be Conlan returning to train in Northern Ireland leaving star-studded southern California. Top Rank is being very careful with Conlan, as evidenced by their reluctance to make a fight as attractive as the other bouts on this card, especially with this being a St. Patrick’s Day event. Soon Conlan’s competition must drastically improve. Joseph Adorno (5-0, 5KO’s) goes up against what should be an early exiting Ivan de la Madrid (3-2) in another Super featherweight bout.
As attractive as those bouts may turn out to be, Denver boxing fans are interested in just one bout, the junior featherweight rematch between Jose Gonzalez (8-0-2, 2KO’s) and Denver’s Adan ‘Donster’ Gonzales (3-1-2, 2KO’s). These two fought back on December 17, 2017, at the same Madison Square Garden Theater, where judge Don Ackerman was the only judge remembering to bring his ‘Foster Grants’ to ringside. Ackerman scored the fight 58-56 in favor of Adan Gonzales while judges Carlos Ortiz, Jr. and Tony Paolillo saw the fight even at 57-57 for what was some obvious ‘home cookin’. Unless you are ‘blind in one eye and can’t see out of the other’, this was a clear win for Denver’s Adan ‘Donster’ Gonzales and we can only hope there is another pair at ringside to help Judge Ackerman get it right this time. Adan Gonzales is looking to stop the Top Rank prospect Jose Gonzalez and end any further discussions. “We weren’t given the decision last time”, began Adan’s trainer Donald Camarena, “but Saturday night, we won’t leave it in the hands of the judges. We are returning to fight again in HIS backyard and this time it’s not going the distance, one way or the other”.
The ESPN/ESPN Deportes LIVE televised portion of their broadcast begins at 6PM MST with the undercard bouts found on the ESPN Mobile App beginning at 3:30PM MST.
